Nelsan Ellis Tribute

I learned on July 8, 2017 that Nelsan Ellis, who played Shinwell, has died. I didn’t think that I’d do any posts of this blog until it returned, but I should do a tribute to the actor who passed away of heart disease since he did have a main role on the show for this most recent season.

This man died so quickly, he still has a new film coming out. It is called True to the Game and is set to be released on September 8th, 2017. If I can see it easily, I’ll be sure to review it as it is his final role that we’ll ever see. The plot relates to a criminal trying to get out of his crime business in order to settle down with a young woman. Here’s the trailer followed by my thoughts on it.

Thoughts on trailer: This is a film that is black-centric by the looks of it. I hope that it is different than how the others look, but I haven’t seen enough of this genre to know what the difference might be between them. It could be interesting, but it also seems like it could lead to stereotypes. I guess that I’ll have to see if it is good or not. Expect a review when it comes out provided it is in most theaters and not some other format. I hope that Nelsan has a major role in it, although I’ll watch it regardless.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, it’s time to mention more of Nelsan’s film and TV career. He has played some real life characters in the movies Secretariat, The Butler, and Get on up. He also appeared in a movie based on the controversial Stanford Prison Experiment. Another film he did was The Soloist which has a story based off of an actual person. The other, notable film that he did was The Help which I should watch sometime. The only shows he had a major role on besides Elementary were True Blood and The Inside, the second of which didn’t last a whole season before it was pulled from the schedule, although all of it aired outside of the US.

I do have to wonder if Elementary will pay tribute to his character or not. He was killed off already, but they could and probably should now do a better send-off than what his character got. I don’t know what we will see in the upcoming season or when it will start. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. But that’s not the point of this blog post. Below are two tribute videos to him.

Well, I might as well wrap up this post as I can’t really make a quick video for him without a youtube account and I don’t have much need for one of those right now. I should review the film he is in next in this blog provided that it is a major enough film for me to see in a local theater. I will miss the actor even if I didn’t really like his character. Keep an eye out in the future for a review of that in this blog. I’ll keep the actual updates for that movie in my CSI: Cyber blog so be sure to check that. For now, this is Adam Decker, signing off.
